Great Barracuda

Great Barracuda (Sphyraena barracuda)

Melodie Grafstrom took the Fish ID Class a few months ago and last week she spotted this Great Barracuda off of Sans Souci Beach. The barracuda was about 20 inches in length! Great Barracuda can actually grow up to 6ft, however, they are usually much smaller in the Hawaiian Islands.

A few times during the benthic habitat surveys we have seen a Great Barracuda and we usually try to hide any shiny metallic objects. While the Great Barracuda has a reputation as a ferocious predator that may attack humans, John E. Randall  states that “six cases of barracuda attack have been reported in the Hawaiian Islands in the last 42 years.”
