Aloha reef watchers! We are in the process of creating fish slideshows that will help you better learn fishes and understand our surveys. Our first slideshow is titled, Intro to Fishes. If you want to learn more about tail, fin, and body shapes, and colors and patterns of fishes, click on the image below! The slideshows (once they are completed) will also be posted under the Methods tab, in the Fish Watch, near the quizzes section.
Hi all:
I just looked at your Intro to fish slideshow. I have a comment. I think it is an awesome start. However, there are some things that will make it pop to the people that view it. One of these is: embedding a video of the types of fish we have around Waikiki, and comparing the body types to those on the slideshow. Adding the names to our most common fish will also start the beginning stages of fish identification. Hope this helps.
Yes, thanks for the feedback Vanessa! We have several more slideshows we’ll be posting soon, at least two of which will review common reef families and species. We’re trying to split it up into bite-size pieces, but if it turns out that it’s more helpful to combine, we can do that, too. We’ll work on incorporating some video clips to supplement the still photography if the platform we’re using allows for it. Mahalo! 🙂
I’ve watched all three presentations and found them to be interesting and educational. My suggestion would be to add the name of the fish under the photo e.g. stocky hawkfish or black triggerfish. This would aid in completing the REEF surveys. Thanks for all the hard work that went into creating these useful tools.
