Most fishes have teeth. After all, they need them to eat! But there is one fish species in Hawaiian waters that have teeth that resemble human molars. It’s sort of like a snapper, can you guess what it is? The scientific name is Monotaxis grandoculis, which means one taxa with big eyes. Sound familiar? It’s the Big Eye Emperor, the only species of Emperor fish in Hawai’i and they can get up to 2 feet long and 13 pounds! They use their molar-like teeth to eat gastropods and crabs. They are also a popular food fish for humans, which is why they are so difficult to approach.
